Case File 49

Don't Lie to Lance

A $70 invoice could have been paid with a single check. Instead, a year of broken promises turned it into a lesson about principles, persistence, and why you should never lie to Lance.

Episode 49Collections, Small Claims Court, Lance2026-06-22

When an attorney ignored a modest SCCO invoice, the amount owed was never really the issue. After multiple invoices, reminders, courtesy calls, and repeated promises that a check was "on the way," nothing arrived. Nearly a year later, SCCO's legal counsel, Lance, recommended filing a small claims action. The irony wasn't lost on anyone: the defendant was the same attorney whose ex-wife had hired SCCO to serve him with contempt papers for failing to pay a court-ordered obligation. What started as a $70 invoice eventually grew to $355 after filing fees, service costs, interest, and attorney fees. "Don't Lie to Lance" is a story about accountability, following the process, and the expensive consequences of ignoring small problems until they become much larger ones.
