Most service jobs have a clear plaintiff and a clear defendant.

This one had two customers.

Alan was hired by a husband to serve divorce paperwork on his wife. The assignment was straightforward. He located her, completed the service, and expected the job to be finished.

Instead, she started laughing.

As it turned out, she had recently filed her own divorce action and had been trying to locate her husband for service. Now that a constable was standing on her doorstep, she saw an opportunity.

She handed Alan a second set of papers.

For her husband.

A short time later, Alan returned to the address of the man who had originally hired him. First, he provided proof that the wife's paperwork had been successfully served. Then he delivered a second surprise.

The wife's divorce papers.

The look on his face said everything.

The Constable Files – Episode 26: Return to Sender is a true story about timing, irony, and one of the few cases where both sides of a divorce ended up hiring the same constable.

Because sometimes the person sending the paperwork ends up receiving some of their own.
